BIG Places 1st and 2nd in PE Case Competition
Congratulations to the two BIG teams that competed in the PE Case Comp and placed 1st and 2nd. The judges grilled them mercilessly, but standing their ground they pushed through to victory. Congrats!!!

Investing in Israel: How Innovation from the Start-up Nation is Changing Lives
The Berkeley Investment Group and TAMID Israel Investment Group are hosting "Investing in Israel: How Innovation from the Start-Up Nation is Changing all of Our Lives" to shed light on Israel's unique innovative edge. Jon Medved will be speaking about the unique business landscape of Israel, specific innovations coming out of Israel, and how it has affected the US and global economy. He will also be speaking about his personal experiences as a venture capitalist and CEO of an internationally traded company, and some of his key considerations when investing in a company.
About Jon Medved:
Jon Medved is the former CEO of Vringo (NYSE: VRNG), CEO of Meret Optical Communications which was acquired by Amoco (NYSE: BP), and has founded Israel Seed Partners, a leading Venture Capital Fund investing in early stage hi-tech companies with many successful exits (Shopping.com, Compugen, Answers.com, Cyota, Mobile Access and Broadlight). He graduated from Cal, became a serial entrepreneur, and now is “one of Israel’s leading high tech venture capitalists” according to the Washington Post (Dec 5, 2007). In the September, 2008 he was named "one of the top 10 most influential Americans who have impacted Israel" by the New York Times.

The case kickoff for the DSP BIG Case Competition is this Monday April 16 in 102 Wurster from 6-8 pm. BIG and DSP will release the case and Haas Professor Etter will give a holistic background to private equtiy All are welcome to come and learn. If you are a registered team, be sure come!

DSP and BIG Private Equity Case Competition

DSP and BIG Private Equity Case Competition
Delta Sigma Pi and the Berkeley Investment Group are proud to be partnering with Alpine Investors and Greyrock Capital Group to co-host our first Private Equity Case Competition.
The Case
The purpose of the competition is to grasp the long-term investing experience in private companies by simulating the role of a private equity portfolio manager and analyzing a target company. Teams of up to four students (including at least one non-Haas major) must analyze a private company target's investment characteristics and present on the viability of the investment opportunity. Participants are invited to attend a Private Equity Seminar with Greyrock Capital and learn the basics of analyzing private companies before digging into the case.
Submissions will be judged based on the quality of research and analysis, presentation skills, and investment judgement. The winning team will be rewarded with a cash prize of $500 and second place will win $300.
First Round
Teams must prepare a 6-7 slide PowerPoint deck of their financial analysis and investment recommendation. Participants will have the opportunity to interview a manager from the target company before making their first round submissions.
Final Round
Judges from Greyrock, Alpine, the target company, and the Haas faculty will select the top submissions from the First Round to compete in the Final Round for $800 in cash prizes. Final round presentations will be judged by and receive feedback from investment professional at Greyrock Capital and Alpine Investors as well as target company management and Haas faculty.

Berkeley Investment Group Team Wins National Stock Competition

A team from the Berkeley Investment Group (BIG) won first place in the Georgetown Stock Pitch Conference Saturday. Team captain George Eliades alongside Anthony D’Asaro, Kevin Hsu, and Max Oltersdorf pitched Diamond Foods in the 3rd annual national stock pitch competition at Georgetown. The conference featured teams from Stanford, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the Ross School at the University of Michigan, the Stern School at NYU, the Mason School at William & Mary, and many more.
In the first round, BIG defeated USC and Michigan with its 10-minute pitch followed by 10-minutes of Q&A by a panel of judges. In the final round BIG defeated William & Mary, George Mason, and Georgetown and took home the $2,000 first place prize.
